Patient Portal - Just What The Doctor Ordered


At Florida Child Neurology we have taken a proactive step towards some of the upcoming changes and requirements to the medical field. One of these is changes has been the implementation of an EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system. We first implemented our EMR system in 2008. Shortly after we launched our patient portal to better serve our patients, and to give them easier access to their medical records.


Before we share why the portal is beneficial to you, let’s go through a bit of background. In 1973 two men proposed that patients be given regular complete access to their medical records. Their belief was that by having access to that, patients would develop a better understanding of their conditions and treatment, and be better equipped to be an active participant in their care. It would serve to educate the patient, open lines of communication between the patient and provider, and create greater patient autonomy. This idea was adopted and put into practice by very few in the medical field.


In 2011 CMS (Children’s Medical Services) implemented a staged rollout to qualify medical providers and facilities who wished to participate in their Electronic Medical Record Program. This program sets forth a great deal of requirements to be adopted at different times during a staged rollout within the participating practices all aimed at improving record access and accountability between patients and providers.


One of these requirements is to provide patients the ability to view online, download and transmit their health information within four business days of the information being available. And to also provide clinical summaries for each patient visit.


The great news is that we, at Florida Child Neurology, have had this available to our patients since 2013. Many of our patients have registered for, and are actively using our patient portal for quick and convenient access to their medical records and clinical notes. The ease at which you can review test results, diagnosis, and treatment plans allows you to spend less time chasing down information, and more time living life. The benefits go beyond just the patient. By giving patients access to their medical records with the click of a mouse, this cuts down on calls and requests to our staff, which in turn allows us to operate more efficiently, and can improve wait times, and turn around times on requests.
